FAQS

What is TRAP-X?

TRAP-X has been designed and field tested to specifically to target the invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax). It offers a selective, bycatch-friendly solution with built-in escape routes for beneficial insects such as bees, bumblebees, hoverflies, and native wasps.

Is TRAP-X safe for bees and other pollinators?

Yes. TRAP-X includes carefully engineered escape features and has been proven in trials to allow non-target insects to exit safely. We also recommend baits that do not attract bees or bumblebees. It is important to check the trap regularly for any non-target insects and release them promptly if found.

What bait should I use with TRAP-X?

For best results, use a non-toxic, fruit-based lure to attract Asian hornets. Fermenting fruit baits or protein-rich attractants may also be suitable, depending on the season.

When should I deploy TRAP-X?

To avoid catching native queen wasps, TRAP-X should be deployed from the last week of May onwards, once most native wasp queens have nested. Trapping can continue through to the end of November, depending on local hornet activity and weather.

Where should I position the trap?

  • Away from flowering plants – avoid placing traps near flowers, fruit trees, or known bee foraging areas.

  • In partial shade – hornets prefer sheltered but visible areas; shaded spots often perform best.

  • At head height or higher – hang traps around 1.5 to 2 metres above ground level for best results.

How often should I check and change the bait?

Check traps every few days during peak activity. Replace the bait every 2–3 weeks, or sooner if the liquid evaporates or becomes full of insects. Fresh bait ensures continued effectiveness.

Can I use TRAP-X all year round?

We advise against using TRAP-X before late May, as this may result in bycatch of native wasp queens. Traps can be deployed earlier only under expert supervision to target Vespa velutina queens.

Is TRAP-X compatible with other attractants?

Yes. TRAP-X can be used with other baits, provided they are appropriate for hornet trapping and do not attract non-target species such as bees or hoverflies. It is most effective when paired with the Apitura Bait Pod and lure.
